Snæfellsnes & Stykkishólmur

From Reykjavík · 1–2 days · 09:00–20:00

Glaciers, lava fields, black churches and Kirkjufell – then seafood dinner by the harbour in Stykkishólmur. The drive back is long, so we suggest staying the night.

  1. 09:00 Reykjavík – Head north through the Hvalfjörður tunnel.
  2. 10:25 Borgarnes – Coffee stop in saga country – the Settlement Centre tells the story of Egill Skallagrímsson.
  3. 12:40 Búðir black church – A lone black wooden church in the lava field, with Snæfellsjökull behind it.
  4. 13:25 Arnarstapi & Hellnar – Walk the cliff path from Arnarstapi to Hellnar (about 2.5 km) and have fish soup at Fjöruhúsið by the shore.
  5. 15:00 Djúpalónssandur – A black pebble beach with the rusted remains of a 1948 shipwreck and the old fishermen's lifting stones.
  6. 16:40 Kirkjufell – Iceland's most photographed mountain, with the Kirkjufellsfoss waterfall in front.
  7. 17:55 Stykkishólmur – Sjávarpakkhúsið – Dinner in an old harbour warehouse – mussels and scallops from Breiðafjörður, and a well-earned drink now that the car is parked.
  8. 20:00 Stay in Stykkishólmur – Stay the night (e.g. Fosshotel Stykkishólmur) and drive back to Reykjavík in the morning – about 2 hours.
