South Coast to Vík

From Reykjavík · 08:30–19:20

A long but unforgettable day along the south coast: walk behind a waterfall, feel the spray of Skógafoss and stand on the black sand at Reynisfjara before a brewpub lunch in Vík.

  1. 08:30 Reykjavík – Leave early – this is a long day, especially in winter daylight.
  2. 10:40 Seljalandsfoss – A path leads behind the curtain of water – bring a rain jacket. Gljúfrabúi hides in a gorge a short walk away.
  3. 12:00 Skógafoss – A 60-metre wall of water; climb the steps for the view over the coast.
  4. 13:25 Reynisfjara – Black sand, basalt columns and the Reynisdrangar sea stacks. Keep well back from the water – the 'sneaker waves' are dangerous.
  5. 14:20 Vík – Smiðjan Brugghús – A late lunch of burgers and the brewery's own beers in Iceland's southernmost village. Driver: try their soft drinks and take the beer home.
  6. 16:55 Hvolsvöllur – Stretch your legs at the Lava Centre (volcano exhibition) or grab coffee for the drive back.
  7. 19:20 Reykjavík – Back in town for a late dinner – or stay the night in the south and continue east.
