Argentína steikhús opened on 27 October 1989 on Barónsstígur and for nearly three decades was one of Reykjavík's best-known steakhouses, run in its first years by chefs Kristján Þór Sigfússon and Óskar Finnsson. Guests entered through a wood-panelled tunnel into a dim, brick-walled dining room where steaks, Icelandic lamb and fish were cooked over a charcoal grill in full view. While other restaurants chased trends, Argentína kept its classic menu and became a standard choice for family celebrations. In April 2018 a burst hot-water pipe forced it to close for repairs, and it never reopened; the company went bankrupt in 2020.

In 2020 an application was filed to convert the building into apartments
