Ólafur Laufdal, who had already built up Hollywood, opened Broadway at Álfabakki 6 in Mjódd on 6 November 1981, with dinner, a big stage show and dancing for up to 1,500 guests, and it quickly became the country's most popular restaurant. In 1986 he opened Hótel Ísland in Ármúli, licensed for 2,200, and Broadway later moved into that building. Over the years the venues hosted Tom Jones, Jerry Lee Lewis, Fats Domino, The Shadows, Rod Stewart, Nick Cave and The Strokes; Björgvin Halldórsson was entertainment manager for many years and staged shows such as Allt vitlaust and Þó líði ár og öld, and Stjórnin was the Hótel Ísland house band for about three years. Ólafur stepped back around 2004 and his son Arnar Laufdal ran the business, with Sigríður Beinteinsdóttir's Tina Turner tribute among the later shows. Broadway's last night was 11 April 2014, and the building is now Hótel Ísland, a spa hotel.
