Eldsmiðjan (1986–c. 2020) – Lost Tables

Eldsmiðjan opened on quiet Bragagata in 1986 and was one of Iceland's first pizzerias. Its pizzas were baked over an open fire of aromatic birch, which gave them a distinctive smoky flavour.

Eldsmiðjan opened on quiet Bragagata in 1986 and was one of Iceland's first pizzerias. Its pizzas were baked over an open fire of aromatic birch, which gave them a distinctive smoky flavour. The walls were covered in kitschy art, a kindergarten sat outside the window, and the place grew to two floors. Eldsmiðjan later became a chain with four branches, but the original on Bragagata depended heavily on tourists, and the pandemic ended it after 34 years. In 2021 Vísir reported "Eldsmiðjan kveður eftir 35 ár" as the last branch made way for a new pizzeria.

The house was put up for sale with its oven and fittings in late 2020; the last Eldsmiðjan branch on Suðurlandsbraut closed in 2022.
