Faktorý was the new name, from 2010, of the venue at Smiðjustígur 6 that had long been known as Grand Rokk, a low-ceilinged upstairs room that had hosted thousands of concerts over more than a decade – Hjálmar and Retro Stefson took some of their first steps towards fame there. Under the Faktorý name it added a small, dingy downstairs room that suited electronic music, set on a graffiti-covered square in the heart of town. The block was earmarked for hotel development, and on 11 August 2013 GusGus played the last night to a packed house, with Biggi Veira criticising the city council for not protecting cultural venues like Faktorý and NASA. The buildings on Smiðjustígur were then redeveloped into a hotel.
