Hótel Holt was built in 1965, and its dining room became one of Reykjavík's classic addresses for formal French cooking, served under gilt-framed paintings. The hotel bar, lined with quick sketches that Jóhannes Kjarval had drawn on packing paper and given to the original owner, was described as a time capsule of polished wood, burgundy carpet and leather chairs. In the 2000s the long-running restaurant, known as Gallery Holt, was famous for its good-value French lunch alongside dishes such as reindeer with blueberry sauce. It closed around 2017, and early in 2018 the KEX group took over the room with a new menu, preserving the old-fashioned interior.
The KEX group opened a new restaurant, Holt, in the space in 2018, keeping the retro interior
