Grand Rokk began as a pub in the building on Klapparstígur that later housed Sirkus, known mostly for cover bands. After moving to Smiðjustígur it became, from around 2002, the heart of Reykjavík's live rock scene: promoter Freyr Eyjólfsson booked up to three gigs a week and bands never had to pay to play. Hjálmar played their very first show there, and Singapore Sling, Mínus, Brain Police, The Fall, Stereolab and Bob Log III all took the low upstairs stage. In 2006 new owners scaled the concerts down and fitted the upstairs with sports screens, and the pub downstairs carried on for its regulars. The upstairs floor was later reborn as Faktorý, and in 2023 musicians still listed Grandrokk among the venues the city had lost.

The upstairs venue became Faktorý, which closed in 2013 to make way for hotel development.
