Gúttó í Vestmannaeyjum (1891–1936) – Lost Tables

The Good Templar house on Mylnuhóll was built in 1890–91 under carpenter Sveinn Jónsson, and chains were buried at its corners so that the wind would not lift it off its foundation. It grew in stages, gaining a refreshment hall, a porch and finally a stage with a dressing room.

It grew in stages, gaining a refreshment hall, a porch and finally a stage with a dressing room. Islanders came for dances, plays, tombolas and masquerades, and from 1915 films were shown there too. When the town was electrified in 1915, Gúttó got its own line shared with the telephone station, so it often stayed lit when other houses did not. A Norwegian male choir from Oslo sang there in 1924, and locals long swore the odd old building was haunted. It was torn down in 1936 to make way for the town's new assembly hall.
