Nýlenduvöruverzlun Hemma & Valda, 'Hemmi and Valdi's Colonial Store', was opened by two young fathers in the old corner house at Laugavegur 21, the building that had earlier been home to the co-operative café Kaffi Hljómalind. By day it was a family café that even sold baby clothes, and by night a relaxed bar with grandmother-style furniture, cheap beer, jazz nights and troubadours. Upstairs there was a foosball table, and up-and-coming bands played impromptu shows. Grapevine readers voted it the best place to start the night in 2009, 2010 and 2011. It eventually had to move out to make way for a property development that was never built.
MacLand later took over the space.
