Restaurateur Ólafur Laufdal took over a club called Sesar in Ármúli, remodelled it and opened it as Hollywood on 2 March 1978, with such a crowd that many were turned away; he ran it with his wife, Kristín Ketilsdóttir. Inspired by Studio 54 in New York, it was the first club in Iceland with a light-up dance floor and video equipment, with TVs on the walls showing music videos, and DJs such as Leópold Sveinsson, Vilhjálmur Ástráðsson and Ásgeir Tómasson spinning disco. It was open every day except alcohol-free Wednesdays and was known for glamour: Módel '79 fashion shows on Thursdays and Sundays, the Miss Hollywood contest with a car or a trip to Hollywood as the prize, and entertainers like Laddi and Haukur Morthens. Guests famously sent notes and birthday or love messages to the DJ booth to be read out over the dance floor. Ólafur sold the business in 1987; bands like Sixties kept playing there in the late eighties, and by the early nineties the club had been renamed Jollygood.
Renamed Jollygood around the early 1990s
