The site had long held Jensenbaukur, for years the only restaurant in Akureyri, before merchant Vigfús Sigfússon bought it in 1898 and opened Hótel Akureyri. After a fire in December 1901 he rebuilt it as a two-storey timber hotel with towers, completed by 1908 and considered the finest guesthouse in Iceland at the time, with a dining room, wine cellar and a large hall for exhibitions and celebrations. After Vigfús died in 1916, Theodor Johnson leased it and ran a café with live music in the evenings. Hotel operations ended in 1919, the house was turned into apartments, and it burned to the ground on 17 November 1955.
Converted to flats around 1920; the building burned in 1955
