The old Hótel Búðir opened in 1947 as a guesthouse with a fish restaurant at the lonely trading post of Búðir on the south coast of Snæfellsnes, below the glacier. It became a cherished retreat for artists, and the Nobel laureate Halldór Laxness often stayed and wrote there, as did the painter Jóhannes Kjarval. The business became a limited company in 1956, and the hotel remained a quiet, much-loved stop on the peninsula for over half a century. On 21 February 2001 a fire destroyed the hotel completely, and a new building opened on the same spot in 2003.

A new Hótel Búðir opened on the same site on 14 June 2003
