Hressingarskálinn, 'the refreshment pavilion', opened in 1932 at Austurstræti 20, in a timber house from 1805 – often called the oldest restaurant in Reykjavík. For decades it was the city's living room, where writers and intellectuals came in from the cold for coffee, food and conversation; the modernist poet Steinn Steinarr was among its most famous regulars. Late in the 20th century it lost its old character and became a nightclub, and later the sports bar Bjarni Fel. In June 2021 it reopened as Hressingarskálinn in its old spirit, with home cooking, pancakes and the famous Hressó cake.

Revived as Hressingarskálinn in 2021, in its old form
