Kaffi Thomsen (1996–2002) – Lost Tables
Kaffi Thomsen at Hafnarstræti 17 began in 1996 as a small café on an upper floor and, riding the dance-music boom of the late nineties, grew into a two-floor club. It had a big sound system and the country's best-known DJs, who filled the weekends with techno, drum 'n' bass and deep house.
Its finest hour came in summer 2000, when Reykjavík's city council trialled unrestricted bar opening hours: Thomsen became the place everyone went once the other bars had shut, and one regular later recalled stepping out into the morning sun at nine o'clock. The club closed in 2002, at the end of the era it had come to define.
