Iceland's first and only cat café opened on Bergstaðastræti in March 2018. Its founders, Ragnheiður Birgisdóttir and Gígja Sara Björnsson, had seen cat cafés abroad.
Iceland's first and only cat café opened on Bergstaðastræti in March 2018. Its founders, Ragnheiður Birgisdóttir and Gígja Sara Björnsson, had seen cat cafés abroad. Homeless cats from the animal welfare group Villikettir lived on the premises, and guests could get to know a cat over a cup of coffee and take it home. Over eight years about 170 cats found new homes this way. The café closed its doors for good on 23 August 2026, with the remaining cats still waiting for adoption.
