Lækjarbrekka opened in 1981 in the rebuilt merchant's house and bakery at Bankastræti 2, part of the Bernhöftstorfa row that had been saved from demolition by a decade-long preservation campaign and protected in 1979. The house was built in 1834 as a dwelling and bakery; the baker Tönnies Daniel Bernhöft arrived the following year, and Bernhöftsbakarí ran there until 1931. For almost forty years the restaurant served Icelandic food – lamb, fish, game and other local specialities – with home-baked bread, becoming a fixture for visitors and celebrations alike. It closed on 13 April 2020; the owners cited the collapse of WOW air the year before and the pandemic, and said the closure was most likely permanent.
