The 'Little Coffee House' opened on 4 June 1960 beside Suðurlandsvegur, the main road east over Hellisheiði, and for 65 years it was the place to stop for coffee and a bite on the way to or from the south – a warm refuge on a stretch of road known for sudden weather. Stefán Þormar Guðmundsson and his family ran it for 24 years until he retired in 2016. After a brief closure in summer 2021, the family of Hlöðver Sigurðsson, founder of Hlöllabátar, took over, but times were hard, especially after Olís moved its petrol station from the site to Norðlingaholt, ending 63 years of fuel sales there. The café closed on 28 June 2025, and that August the tour company Icelandia bought the building to use as a base for northern-lights tours.
