When the Mjólkursamsalan dairy's new building on Laugavegur went up in 1945, its top floor became a dance hall run by Guðmundur Kristjánsson on the dairy's behalf, and for the next eight years it was one of the most popular dance spots in town. The KK-sextett, probably the best-known band to play there, appeared shortly after it formed in autumn 1947, and the bands of Steinþór Steingrímsson, Árni Ísleifsson and Eyþór Þorláksson and the GO-kvintett also played. Besides dances the hall hosted chess tournaments, beauty contests and meetings. Alcohol was generally not sold – when it was, only by the full or half bottle – so guests usually brought their own. Dancing ended in 1953, and since the mid-1980s the building has housed the National Archives of Iceland.
