After the Independence Party moved out, its old ballroom by Austurvöllur served for decades as a staff canteen for the phone company Póstur og sími, until it reopened as the live venue NASA in 2001. For the next decade it was one of Reykjavík's main stages during the boom in Icelandic music and a fixture of Iceland Airwaves every year, with foreign acts such as Television, The Rapture, Tindersticks and Cut Copy, alongside club nights and school dances. In January 2012 the festival's director Grímur Atlason warned that losing NASA would cost Airwaves about a fifth of its capacity, as the owner planned a hotel on the site and the venue was due to close on 1 June 2012. The closure drew protests from musicians; the exterior was protected in 2011 and the ballroom interior in December 2014. The hall was finally taken down in 2018 and rebuilt as a near-identical copy within the hotel project, reopening for concerts in 2023 as Sjálfstæðissalurinn.
