Óðal stood at Austurstræti 12a, right by Austurvöllur, and newspaper advertisements for 'ÓÐAL v/Austurvöll' appear from 1976, including one announcing 'Óðal númer eitt' that April, suggesting it opened around then. For a time it was a respected restaurant as well as a nightclub, one of the established names on the square in front of Parliament. In its later years the club turned to striptease, until Iceland's outright ban on strip shows took effect on 1 July 2010. The owner then relaunched it as a sports-themed bar, but the operating company went into bankruptcy the following winter. Today the address is home to Gilligogg, one of the city's best cocktail bars.
