Perlan, the glass-domed landmark on Öskjuhlíð, opened in 1991 with a restaurant on a revolving floor, so the view of the city slowly turned during a meal. It stayed a popular restaurant for a quarter of a century. In 2016 it was announced that a natural history exhibition would move into the building and that Kaffitár and Rammagerðin would take over the food service and retail. The restaurant had to be vacated by 10 January 2017. Its longtime operator, Bjarni Ingvar Árnason, called the change "very sad". The floor was kept, but the new operators said it would rarely revolve.

Perlan became a natural history museum and exhibition; Kaffitár and Rammagerðin took over the food and retail.
