Rex / Jacobsen (c. 1999–c. 2010) – Lost Tables
Austurstræti 9 was built in 1907 and for most of the century housed Egill Jacobsen's well-known shop. When the shop closed in 1998, the restaurant and nightclub Rex moved into the protected building and became part of the Austurstræti nightlife strip.
Austurstræti 9 was built in 1907 and for most of the century housed Egill Jacobsen's well-known shop. When the shop closed in 1998, the restaurant and nightclub Rex moved into the protected building and became part of the Austurstræti nightlife strip. Toward the end of the decade Rex gave way to the club Jacobsen, named after the old merchant, which Fréttablaðið in 2009 compared in atmosphere to the legendary Kaffi Thomsen. The club era ended when The Laundromat Café opened in the house in 2010. The name lived on, though: a cocktail bar on Austurstræti later called itself Jacobsen Loftið.
The Laundromat Café opened in the building in 2010; the 1907 house itself has been protected since 1991.
