Safari (later Roxzý, Casablanca) (1983–1986) – Lost Tables

Safari opened in early February 1983 at Skúlagata 30, in a building owned by Tómas A. Tómasson, who had run the alcohol-free teen club Villti tryllti Villi there the year before.

Safari opened in early February 1983 at Skúlagata 30, in a building owned by Tómas A. Tómasson, who had run the alcohol-free teen club Villti tryllti Villi there the year before. Low-ceilinged, with room for 450 and a blinking disco floor, it was for a while the only place in town with regular live music after Hótel Borg stopped hosting bands: Mezzoforte played on opening night, and Egó, Grafík, Kukl, Þursaflokkurinn and Tappi tíkarrass followed, while Grace Jones came by as a guest. The Icelandic Duran Duran fan club was founded at a Duran Duran evening there, and the club even ran its own label, Safari Records, which released albums by Frakkarnir and Bubbi Morthens. Business was shaky: the place was put up for sale in 1984, closed and reopened several times, and the last Safari night was at New Year 1985–86. In February 1986 it reopened as Roxzý, where Einstürzende Neubauten and Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds played, and later as Casablanca, which ran until near the end of the century.

No longer a nightclub; the Kex hostel operates in the neighbouring building
