The oldest part of Sólgarður was built in the mid-1930s by the parish council and the local youth association as a meeting house for the inner Eyjafjörður valley. After a new south wing was added, it was formally opened as a community hall on 30 October 1954, the first in Eyjafjörður under the new community-hall law. For decades it hosted dances, plays, þorrablót midwinter feasts and Christmas parties, and it also served as the parish school. A north wing around 1979–80 gave it its symmetrical gables. Since July 2003 the building has housed Smámunasafnið, Sverrir Hermannsson's quirky museum of small everyday objects.
