The Stork Club opened in autumn 1960 in Herðubreið, the old ice house by Tjörnin that the Progressive Party had bought around 1955 and begun renting out; it was run by Þorsteinn Viggósson and Magnús Hannesson. Lúdó sextett, then the country's most popular band, was the house band in the downstairs hall, which seated over 300, while Finnur Eydal's group played the smaller upstairs room for about a hundred guests. Falcon and the J.J. Quintet also played, the owners tried to bring in foreign entertainers, and the club hosted jazz nights and the Miss Iceland pageant. Business was poor, and press reports of under-age drinking and pressure on guests to buy drinks did not help; the club went bankrupt in autumn 1961, about a year after it opened. Glaumbær opened in the same rooms and became far more famous.

Listasafn Íslands (same building that became Glaumbær)
