The old Nýja bíó cinema, which had shown films on the corner of Lækjargata and Austurstræti from 1920 to 1987, reopened in 1987 as Lækjartunglið, soon shortened to Tunglið ('The Moon'). It became one of the city's hottest clubs and a mid-sized concert hall for every kind of music, at its peak in the early-to-mid nineties. Ham played its farewell concert there in 1994, and The Prodigy played the club on 24 September 1994, the same night they also played Kaplakriki in Hafnarfjörður. A security guard spotted fire in the building on the morning of 30 July 1998; it was one of the largest fires in the history of downtown Reykjavík, and the building was destroyed and pulled down. A new building now stands on the corner, home to restaurants such as Hard Rock Café and Grillmarkaðurinn.
