Prikið at 75: the café that raised Reykjavík's hip hop scene
Prikið has been pouring coffee – and later a lot more – at Bankastræti 12 since 1951, making it one of the oldest cafés in Reykjavík. In 2026 it celebrates 75 years.
The place once went by the name Adlon, and apart from closing off the upstairs, the interior has barely changed in decades – a rare thing on a street that reinvents itself every few years.
By night it became something else entirely: Prikið is where much of Reykjavík's hip hop scene grew up, and it still has some of the most loyal regulars in town. In 2026 it was named runner-up for Best Bar in the Reykjavík Grapevine's Best of Reykjavík.
Come in the morning for a classic breakfast, come back late for the music – the crowd changes, the room doesn't.
