Tónabíó lights up again – with beer on tap
The old Tónabíó cinema at Skipholt 33 first opened in April 1962. In March 2026 it reopened as a music venue, with RVK Brewing's taproom pouring twenty-two taps under the same roof.
RVK Bruggfélag – RVK Brewing – was founded in 2017 on Iceland's Beer Day and has brewed more than 200 different beers. Its main taproom moved into Tónabíó in June 2024, and the reopening weekend on 19 March 2026 came with a small festival of Icelandic bands.
The brewers have even gone looking for a lost Tónabíó mural that was covered up during earlier repairs – the plan is to bring it back.
The brewery's cans, designed by Karlsson Wilker, won a gold award from the Icelandic design association FÍT, and the taproom was runner-up for Best Craft Bar in the Grapevine's Best of Reykjavík 2026. Next up is downtown: RVK Brewing has taken over the corner premises on Pósthússtræti – once home to Kaffibrennslan, where owner Sigurður Snorrason says he tasted his first real beer – and plans 20 taps plus the only beer hand pump in Iceland once permits are in place. Tónabíó stays open too.
